Le groupe est déjà sollicité sur d’autres scènes Européennes et se produit maintenant régulièrement à Abbey Road Studios. Une référence légendaire.
Dès les premiers accords de « Stole My Line », Phonixamadhi (prononcé fon-ik sah-mah-dih) vous plonge dans un climat qui est un tourbillon enivrant de genres judicieusement réunis. Une virtuosité indiscutable qui illustre les différentes facettes de ce collectif anglais surdoué, plein de fantaisie, d’imagination et de légèreté (Sweet Emerald Perfume). Phonixamadhi travaille sur d’ambitieuses compositions rehaussées par des arrangements délicats.
Un état spirituel ultime
Ce EP exceptionnel vaut aussi par sa composition éponyme : « Phonique » pour tout ce qui est relatif au son et « Samādhi », un terme utilisé dans la philosophie indienne et bouddhiste qui représente un état spirituel ultime. Une référence absolue à l’improvisation torrentielle du groupe sur scène et dans laquelle leur fougue se conjugue à une véritable délectation musicale.

Phonixamadhi est formé de deux chanteurs, compositeurs et muti-instrumentistes dbClifford et William Cartwright et du batteur Arjun Magee. DbClifford (chant, batterie, Fender Rhodes, Hammond, guitare) a publié son premier album solo sur Sony BMG. Le premier single, « Don’t Wanna », un pur bonheur pop electro, s’est hissé à la première place du hit-parade des radios internationales japonaises et dans le top 40 au Canada, en France et aux Pays-Bas. Il a joué à North Sea Jazz Festival (Herbie Hancock), Rock en Seine (Amy Winehouse, The Roots) et au Festival de Nîmes (James Blunt). Le single « New State of Mind » issu de son second opus a remporté le John Lennon Award pour la meilleure chanson pop 2010.
William Cartwright (chant, moog bass, Wurlitzer, fender bass) est en première ligne de la scène britannique soul-jazz et electro-dance. Il se produit régulièrement au Festival de Glastonbury avec des DJ de renommée. Récemment, il a figuré sur le single « On My Mind » de l’artiste-producteur Dubstep Joker (On My Mind, feat. William Cartwright. Extrait de l’album Vision, sorti en 2011), un hit que diffuse encore BBC1 et qui a atteint plus d’un million de vues sur YouTube. Sur scène, le groupe est accompagné par Arjun Magee, batteur originaire de Bristol, qui a joué avec certains des meilleurs artistes de soul, jazz et reggae du Royaume-Uni. Il a notamment fait la première partie de Maceo Parker.
Un trio surdoué qui déroule une pop soul séduisante, à l’image de cet album réjouissant.

Q. Votre trio ne manque pas d’inspiration, pourquoi le choix d’un EP (NDLR : Extended play*), un mini-album de 5 titres ?
R. Il y a plusieurs facteurs qui ont joué dans la décision de faire un EP plutôt qu’un album complet. Principalement le fait que, de nos jours, en 2014, la plupart des gens écoutent leur musique sur un smartphone ou ordi sur random et le concept d’écouter un album n’existe plus vraiment. Les gens aiment un titre par un artiste et un autre titre par un autre artiste, etc. Donc, nous préférons sortir 5 titres 2 fois par an plutôt que 10 titres tous les 18 mois. Et nous avions envie de sortir quelque chose le plus vite possible pour pouvoir commencer à promouvoir le groupe !
Q. L’album est aussi une ambiance, un voyage qui aboutit à une forme d’élévation et d’apothéose electro (L’instrumental « Dive Bomb », digne d’un générique de film). La spiritualité est aussi l’un des concepts de Phonixamadhi ?
R. Oui, absolument ! Le « Samadhi » dans PHONIXAMADHI (phonic + Samadhi) est un terme indou qui signifie un niveau de concentration élevé, tel que la méditation, le yoga, mais on peut le retrouver chez les sportifs de haut niveau, les joueurs d’échecs et bien sûr les musiciens qui, lorsqu’ils sont sur scène, peuvent se perdre dans un état de spiritualité très intense. Nous sommes une nouvelle génération qui est peut-être plus intéressée par la spiritualité que par la religion, c’est un peu hippy new age mais ça nous plaît 🙂
Q. Beaucoup d’artistes me confient avoir eu la chance d’avoir été bercés pendant leur petite enfance par des voix ou musiciens légendaires. Aboutir à un pareil résultat, c’est forcément avoir acquis une belle connaissance en jazz et de nombreuses techniques d’initiés. Quelles sont les musiques que vos parents écoutaient ?
R. Bien sûr, nous avons tous les trois des influences différentes, mais nous nous rejoignons dans notre amour pour la soul/blues/jazz. Nous avons tous grandi avec les Beatles, Miles Davis, Weather Report et Prince, pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns.
« Nous sommes tous sur la même longueur d’onde »
Q. Avant de former le collectif, chacun de vous était aguerri à la scène avec un parcours déjà remarquable. Comment avez-vous trouvé un terrain d’entente pour vous réunir sous un seul nom ?
R. Pas facile ! William et moi étions déjà un groupe il y a plus de dix ans, mais nous nous sommes séparés à l’époque pour poursuivre des chemins différents. Ce fut le cas et chacun de notre côté nous avons vécu des choses incroyables musicalement, et nous avons eu l’occasion d’expérimenter avec d’autres musiciens. Mais, dix ans plus tard, l’an dernier pour être précis, nous avons réalisé que nous étions vraiment très proches dans notre façon d’aborder la musique et que nous nous complétions parfaitement. Arj Magee (notre batteur) nous aide également beaucoup à garder le cap et je crois qu’à présent nous sommes tous sur la même longueur d’onde.
Q. Vous vous produisez avec succès dans de nombreux festivals européens et régulièrement au légendaire Abbey Road Studio à Londres. Quel est l’objectif de Phonixamadhi en 2015 ?
R. 2015 va être notre plus grosse année pour le moment ! Nous allons enregistrer de nouveaux titres, sans doute sortir un album au Japon et tourner un maximum en Europe. Nous avons également une résidence dans un club à Londres (Charlie Wrights, le dernier samedi de chaque mois à partir de janvier). Notre but est de pouvoir être complètement autonomes et de nous passer de label, avec qui nous n’avons pas eu jusqu’à présent la liberté artistique et financière que nous voulions. Nous sommes sur notre propre label et c’est nous qui décidons à 100 % de la direction dans laquelle nous avançons, c’est très moderne !

The collective English Phonixamadhi just released his self-titled debut EP. Ultimate spiritual state
This unique EP is also its eponymous composition « Phonique » for everything related to sound and « samadhi », a term used in Indian and Buddhist philosophy which represents an ultimate spiritual state. An absolute reference to the torrential group improvisation on stage and in which their spirit is combined with a musical delight.

Q. Your trio is no shortage of inspiration, why choosing an EP (note: Extended play *), a mini album of 5 tracks?
A. There are several factors that played into the decision to make an EP rather than a full album. Mainly the fact that nowadays, in 2014, most people listen to their music on a computer or smartphone on the concept of random and listen to an album no longer really exists. People love a title by artist and other tittle by another artist, etc. So we prefer to get 5 tracks 2 times a year rather than 10 tracks every 18 months, and we wanted to get something out as soon as possible in order to begin to promote the group!
Q. The album is a mood, a journey that leads to a form of elevation and electro apotheosis (Instrumental « Dive Bomb », worthy of a film). Spirituality is also one of the concepts Phonixamadhi.
A. Yes, absolutely! The « Samadhi » in PHONIXAMADHI (phonic + Samadhi) is a Hindu word meaning a high level of concentration, such as meditation, yoga, but also in high level sport athletes, chess players and of course musicians when they are on stage, they can be lost in a state of intense spirituality. We are a new generation that is likely to be more interested in spirituality than religion, it’s a little hippy new age but we like it 🙂
Q. Many artists confided in me that they had the opportunity of being cradled in their early years by many legendary voices and musicians. Which can lead to a result of gaining a good knowledge of music and many insider techniques. What is the music your parents listened to?
A. Of course we all have three different influences, but we come together in our love for soul / blues / jazz. We all grew up with the Beatles, Miles Davis, Weather Report and Prince to name a few.
Q. Prior to forming the group, each of you already on the scene and experienced remarkable careers. How did you find common ground to get together under one name?
A. Not easy! William and I (Daniel) were already a group for more than 10 years, but we separated for some time to pursue different paths. This was the case and literally each one at our side experienced amazing things musically, and we had the opportunity to experienced it with other musicians. But ten years later, last year to be precise, we realized that we were really very close in our approach to music and we complement each other perfectly. Arj Magee (our drummer) also helps us a lot to keep the direction and I think this has us all on the same wavelength.
Q. You produce successfully in many European festivals and regularly at the legendary Abbey Road studio in London. What is the objective of Phonixamadhi in 2015?
A. 2015 will be our biggest year yet! We will record new songs, probably release an album in Japan and performing as much as possible in Europe. We also have a residence in a club in London (Charlie Wrights, every last Saturday of each month, beginning in January). Our goal is to be able to be completely independent and to dispense with labels and now have the artistic and financial freedom we wanted. We are on our own label and it is 100% up to us who decides the direction we want to go in, it is very modern :p
